NICUversary

Blackberry #2 came home from the hospital exactly 1 year ago today. When he came home he was still pretty tiny: 2.2 kilos and 46 cm-s! He spent 51 days in the rollercoaster called NICU. He had good days and bad days. He was diagnosed with PDA, he had feeding issues, they were thinking he had NEC, he got several blood transfusions…, but for the good news: he was never intubated, he didn’t get a brain bleed and he didn’t develop ROP in his eyes. Today is his Nicuversary (l year of being out of the NICU) 🙂 So here are some photos of Blackberry #2:
The first 2 lines appeared in May 2012.
Then his ultrasound at 27 weeks.
A pregnant picture of me, 2 weeks before he was born.
His first photo at day 1.
Then the last 4 photos are taken 1 year ago today: The midwife dressing Blackberry #2 before coming home.
His empty Incubator where he lived for weeks.
Blackberry #2 in his very large snow suit (it was size 62 cm-s).
And finally all my boys at home 🙂

WordPress Family Award

Image

I was nominated by the lovely Evangelia for the WordPress Family Award. I am honoured, thank you very much!

She is a brilliant and versatile and productive blogger. Go check her out if you don’t know her yet:

http://evelenmargaret.com/2013/12/04/versatile-blogger-award-and-wordpress-family-award-my-turn-to-honour/

6 things to say about me :

1. I am the black sheep in my family. Everybody else in my family (Mother, Father, Brother) is a Chemist. I am the only Biologist. I guess I still got the scientist gene. I remember watching liquid nitrogen land on smooth floor and chasing the “bubbles” (ofcourse without touching) when I was 6 years old.

Here is a picture of me at my last conference in Athens, Greece in 2011 at the poster presentation. I cut off the results part of the poster, since the article is still in progress…

2. I have a Ph.D. in Theoretical Medical Sciences. My Thesis was in the subject of pain research focusing on Opiate Receptors.

3. This is my second time being a stay at home Mom. I stayed at home with Blackberry #1 for 2 years and 3 months.

4. I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. 😦

5. I lived in the US for about 4 years. (In Arizona and in Louisiana).

6. I always pictured that I would have girls. 2 of them. Now I am blessed with 2 boys. I am not ungrateful, but a part of me will always long for a little girl. Maybe I will get her in the form of a Grandchild later on in life 🙂

There are so many great blogs on WordPress so it was really hard to choose, but here are my six nominees.:

2013 in pictures

2013 was the year of the good, the bad and the ugly….

It was hard, it was sometimes scary and ofcourse there was lots of joy 🙂

Blackberry #2 finally joined the family at home and I had to learn to be the Momma of 2 boys.

January

Jan.15th was the day, that after 51 days in the NICU, we got to bring Blackberry #2 home from the clinic. This was the day that Blackberry #1 got to meet his little brother for the first time! (no kids are allowed in the NICU).

Image

I didn’t think we would be home by that time, since the year started out bad, really bad. After doing really well, and having all his IV-s out, nothing sticking out of him, on january 1st Blackberry #2 caught some infection and became really ill, and I went in the clinic the first day of the year to find him with an IV in his head, and his leg and arm tied together so he wouldn’t yank it out. Everything started all over again, no milk, antibiotics, IVs, monitors etc….This is exactly why they call your stay at the NICU a rollercoaster. You have good days and then you have bad days and you never know what to expect. But luckily he was strong and became well again soon and was home by the middle of the month 🙂
